jacquelee: (WN: Yasmine thinking)
[personal profile] jacquelee
So I got into a new fandom in February, Warrior Nun. I love it a lot and it inspired me to write nearly 200k words of fic so far and also some meta. I realized I can dust off my journal and post it here, hopefully motivating me to write some more. This is the first one, a character study for Yasmine Amunet, that I wrote for a challenge in Lands of Magic. This is a long meta (4000+ words), basically just recounting every scene she was in and rambling about how much I love her, accompanied with picspams of all the scenes she was in (17 picspams), so, brace yourself for a long post.

When I first started watching Warrior Nun, I had not expected to love it as much as I do now. Seeing social media AU's on Twitter all the time was a big reason why I started watching it, and I didn't expect it to be much more than a good fodder for possible AU's for me to read and write, something I always like. After I had just gotten new blorbos from Willow, I did not plan on gaining blorbos from Warrior Nun. But then I watched the trailer for season 1 and seriously loved it so much that I was like, yep, gonna watch that show right now.

Of course, in that trailer, my favorite characters were Ava, Mary and Camila, which held true throughout the show, even though this is the first show where literally every single of the female major characters is a blorbo for me, to the point that when writing fics I have a hard time either trying to squish nine different characters in the fic or having to limit myself to just a handful of characters, which is hard.

But for the purpose of this challenge, I obviously had to pick one person (yes, I could have chosen two and I wanted to, but with the timing of this challenge that didn't work out) and there are two pretty clear favorites I have, Shotgun Mary and Yasmine Amunet. I picked Yasmine, because she edges out Mary just that little bit (some of that is aesthetics, I just love the way she looks so much, she's so incredibly cute and pretty). I will write up every scene she is in (it's not that many, actually) and accompany my writing with picspams for better visualization.

Starting off with the first appearance in season 2 episode 1. Now, I knew that Mary would not be in the second season because I read up on her fate as soon as I realized she was shaping up to be my favorite blorbo. I also knew there would be a character called Yasmine from reading incorrect quote accounts, but I didn't know any details about her. In this first episode, I was still very sad because of Mary's death (which is made a little better by the fact that she only 'died' because the actress wasn't available and it's a supernatural show, so, no body, no death, that's my story and I'm sticking to it - ETA: also, now that I've watched Toya and Lorena enact some of the original script of season 2, I'm just gonna go with 'Mary was never dead and just always there all along' in the future), so I didn't really expect to fall in love with someone new already.

But Yasmine's first scene was so adorable, it was hard for me to not instantly like her. The way she plays the actual literal pope like a fiddle was amazing, the way she got so excited when talking about the Order of the Cruciform Sword (OCS) was really cute. I must admit, I somehow managed to completely miss that she was a nun until the second episode, thinking that she was just a reporter trying to uncover some kind of conspiracy theory, which honestly would have been amazing.

Not that I don't like who she actually turned out to be, making someone a fangirl of the main character(s) is always a great way of introducing a new character, no matter the reason, and the way it went, her already knowing about the OCS and the Warrior Nun her entire life, was really great.

But sticking with that first scene, seeing Duretti falter was very amusing and the revelation that Yasmine had engineered the entire thing to hack the pope's phone was amazing, had me grinning for real. Like, her little, "No, thank you." with that little cheeky smile was so adorable.

After that, we have the second scene, revealing that she was listening in to the conversation between Mother Superion and Duretti (possibly revealing that she speaks Italian? Just another cool detail I love, but then again, I feel like she speaks about 10 different languages just because that's who she is). I didn't pay much attention to her conspiracy board when I first watched, but since then, I realized that she not only has a picture of Adriel there (obviously) but also pictures of Lilith and Ava (with Beatrice standing next to her but not the focus), with a little sticky note saying 'Warrior Nun?' next to them.

Meaning she already deduced from the camera footage she had that their behavior in the fight meant that Lilith or Ava were indeed the most likely to be the Warrior Nun, with Ava being the prime candidate. Which speaks to Yasmine's abilities of deduction, just something else that's amazing about her. Also, she hacked that phone like it was nothing and not only found the OCS through listening in on it but also knew enough to light that signal later, so she is really technologically adept too. Which is also really great for AU purposes, she can easily be a hacker together with Camila.

My favorite part of this little scene, other than the conspiracy board, which is great in itself, is her scrunching her nose when she says "gotcha". It's so adorable!

The next scene is in episode 2, with Yasmine now meeting Mother Superion and Camila. I love this scene because Yasmine is understandably scared by being threatened with a knife but also so excited about meeting actual members of the OCS. And then of course, she has to show them what happened in this branch of the OCS, which leads to a heartbreaking scene where all three of them are just grieving the dead members of the order.

And then follows the moment when I fully fell in love with Yasmine and actually said out loud "okay, you took my old favorite character from me just to immediately introduce my new favorite, I see what you're doing." lol. But yeah, Yasmine talking about how she's a graduate candidate and then saying that she's babbling, which is what she does when she's nervous, and also when she's not nervous was enough to cement my love for her. Like, yes, sweetie, you can babble all you want, you're doing amazing and you have my whole heart.

The scene that follows is a funny little mood changer (when you ignore that there's still dead bodies lying around). Yasmine saying she can be discrete and Camila very much not believing her and instead immediately shooting her with a tranquilizer, just for Mother Superion to look at her very judgmentally and Camila going "Oh, you were thinking blindfold?" and making that litle 'oops, my bad' gesture, while Yasmine is just lying there, unconscious on the floor.

Now we are in the secret hideout and Yasmine is telling them a little bit more of her story, that she has sworn an oath to deliver her secret directly to the Warrior Nun if and when Adriel would ever be freed from his prison. I love how Mother Superion is skeptical and Camila is already starting her rebellious phase, pretending not to care at all, while Yasmine is just really relieved when Mother Superion agrees to make the call.

Now, this next scene is so small that I hesitated to include it at all, since it has no dialogue and Yasmine is only in the background, but it just has such a big impact on me every time I watch it that I couldn't not include it. Especially since Yasmine's role here is for me personally the most intriguing because while it is obviously significant for both Mother Superion and Camila to break down like that, to simply not be able to take more news about death, and of course Mary's death specifically, for Yasmine to have to stand by and see those two people she barely knows but who she admires so much and who so far have been so strong even in the face of all those deaths, laid bare in front of her, grieving for a person she never met, to not be able to do anything to help them, I imagine that to be profoundly impactful.

Since we don't have time to dwell on this kind of thing in this show, we just say a little prayer for the dead (literally) and then go 'the show must go on' (not literally, but hey, 'our duties resume now' is just about the same) and continue on. Yasmine finally meets the Warrior Nun, clearly taken aback by Ava, who is just about as un-nun-like as one could imagine, but she rolls with it, geeking out about the history she'd been protecting her entire life. Or, well, trying to protect.

That is another aspect of Yasmine's character introduction that I love a lot, she's basically like, look, you have this huge foe now and don't know how to beat him, but I do, except, the weapon I've been sworn to give the Warrior Nun in this exact occasion, well, I don't exactly have it. It got stolen. Oops. It's such a funny way to introduce a MacGuffin and make the characters work for it. Which of course leads to, as Ava so eloquently says, museum heist!

Aka, nuns go Leverage! Lmao. I love everything about this heist, the planning, the execution, the way it's filmed, the way it's a chance for every single character to have some development. It's amazing. And of course, Yasmine is a central player here, knowing what the crown looks like and (theoretically) where it is. I love her little shrug when Ava asks what exactly it means that they can only know that they have the real crown when she touches it. Yasmine's still so excited, but also kinda just like 'I dunno, you're the superhero here'. It's so funny.

Now we have the actual heist. It starts (after Mother Superion shows off her badass-ness) with Camila complaining about Yasmine's driving, being all like 'you said you have encyclopedic knowledge of Madrid's streets' and Yasmine getting defensive, saying that she does, also Paris, Rome, Mumbai and then Camila interrupts her again saying 'Yeah, we thought that meant you knew how to drive' and Yasmine is so deflated, going, 'oh, no, not well'. So cute!

And then, obviously, the heist goes wrong, it was the wrong crown, Yasmine needs to come into the museum to advise. She refuses and Mother Superion tells her that the problem with having all that knowledge is that sometimes she also has to use it, to which Yasmine says she's afraid. I love how this is one of the few moments when Mother Superion gets soft, understanding her and giving her one of the OCS crosses, saying it will protect her. Which of course gets a whole other meaning when you know that there's a knife hidden in the cross.

This entire scene is so important for later, when Yasmine actually uses both her knowledge and the knife hidden in the cross to kill William, claiming proudly that Mother Superion is still alive and with her as a direct callback to this moment, which is really the moment Yasmine becomes an actual member of the OCS, if not officially then certainly in spirit.

And then in the museum, she does use her knowledge and she figures out where the real crown is, only for them all to be thwarted by Vincent. Even though, I love that little tiny moment before everything goes to hell, when the crown lights up in Ava's hand and Yasmine is so proud that she was right, that this is indeed the real crown.

After that, Mother Superion and Yasmine team up again and Yasmine is all 'here are the keys, you drive' but Mother Superion says she needs to provide cover (which does make sense) so Yasmine has to. Yasmine going all 'I don't want to' and Mother Superion saying with that look 'I don't want you to either' and then Yasmine screaming when she starts to drive is just so hilarious. I really love these two together so much, they are an amazing comedic duo.

Now we get Yasmine the getaway driver, which is something she unexpectedly excels at. Except then they can't go back to their hideout because it was set on fire and they have a flat, so they need to switch cars, hijacking a pink pastry truck Camila sees standing in the street. Mother Superion asking Yasmine if she knows how to hot wire a truck and Yasmine all nervously chuckling and going 'no' as if it's just obvious, which, I mean, after all, she is a nun, she has a point there, is hilarious, as is Mother Superion dead pan telling her that Camila (who is also a nun, mind you) will show her. It's just so funny.

And then of course, she is all excited and shaky because, well, doing a museum heist and being a getaway driver and all that will get your adrenaline high. But Camila says it's her low blood sugar and tries to find something to eat, which then leads to the revelation that the pink pastry truck is a pink erotic pastry truck. Hehehe. So now the nuns are eating dick shaped pastry, which is one of the funniest things in this entire show.

But it's also interrupted by Mother Superion going all revenge mode on Vincent, asking for Camila's gun (which she of course provides with no hesitation) and Yasmine is all taken aback, like, okay, you're gonna now kill this dude, not sure how to feel about that, but okay, you do you. I feel like this is the moment she realizes just who exactly she's signing up with here and while she's still fully on board, she clearly is not entirely comfortable with it. Understandably. Of course, Mother Superion does not kill Vincent in the end, so that worry was unfounded but she certainly could have.

We're now already in episode five and starting with Yasmine telling the thrilling tale of how Areala imprisoned Adriel a thousand years ago. She's really a great storyteller, you can viscerally feel what she's talking about. And then we arrive at Jillian's manor and reveal Michael's identity. I really like that group scene, where everyone just stands around in various poses and Yasmine sits on the couch just admiring the crown the entire time. It's adorable.

And now, of course, the conclave. Yasmine's first real trial by fire. I love her enthusiasm at the beginning, how excited she is to be able to be part of this and that Mother Superion doesn't shut her down but encourages her to use her gifts wisely, to listen and not speak. Of course, Yasmine being Yasmine, she isn't able to actually do that, instead interrupting the archbishop of Canterbury the first chance she gets, making a very passionate speech about how everyone there is ignorant and a coward.

Again, I love that Mother Superion immediately jumps in when the archbishop starts attacking Yasmine (verbally, for now) and just basically reiterates everything she said. And luckily, the pope is on their side (it's really funny how he clearly did not get the memo that Yasmine is with the OCS and always has been, looking in her direction in confusion, like, 'hey, didn't I throw you out of my office for being too curious about things that don't concern you? I guess they do concern you after all' :P), standing firmly with them.

Except, of course, this backfires horribly, William, the pope's right hand, is a traitor (shock!) and so are half the people there. Before anyone (even Mother Superion) can act, the other half is dead and only Yasmine, Duretti and Mother Superion are still standing, Yasmine because she hides under the table, Mother Superion because she just kills everyone in her way and Duretti because apparently nobody actually wants to kill the pope.

Yasmine having to face off against William under the table is legit scary but she's doing pretty well, kicking him in the face, even if he manages to cut her leg (which again, there will be a callback later, with her killing him by cutting his leg the right way). Mother Superion leads Yasmine and Duretti to safety, being very soft with Yasmine again when she examines her wound and tells her that she did well (aww, my heart). In the end, they escape and Yasmine is fine albeit quite shaken up.

Episode 6 is were shit hits the fan for real. Yasmine has few scenes this episode, the first two just in the meetings with everyone else but then there's the scene with Camila outside, when they prepare for the mission. I want to take a second before going into that to appreciate her outfit here because it's so cute, especially the hat (I have a soft spot for hats like that). With that out of the way, I need to point out how incredibly adorable these two are, with Yasmine first being all concerned when Camila is like 'oh my god' and then immediately dissolving into a giggle fit when Camila points out the hot guy.

Yasmine just laughing and teasing Camila is so incredibly cute, they truly are sisters. I also took away the headcanon of her being aroace from this scene because of how she just doesn't comment at all as to whether she thinks the guy is hot or not, she just laughs and teases. I mean, of course she's a nun, but so is Camila and she's certainly both looking and commenting, lmao.

After that, we just have Yasmine during Adriel's whole show, mostly in the background. She's the only character we don't see at all during the fight, which makes me think she probably hid really early on. That would be congruent with the story afterwards, since if she hid it would make sense that she missed the window to get out and also that she saw Camila get taken prisoner.

Now we're in episode seven. Again, I want to take a moment for an outfit appreciation because I think Yasmine wears that robe Adriel has his followers wear really well. Very cute, especially with the hood up. I love how it's just handwaved that she not only found one of those robes but also was able to put it on, find out where Camila was held and sneak herself into the guard rotation together with Todd. She really is resourceful when push comes to shove, far more than she gives herself credit for.

The scene where she conks Todd over the head and reveals herself to Camila is incredibly sweet. Especially the hug. And her worry about Todd being dead, her being like 'I never conked anyone over the head before' and her concerned but still kind of proud little look when Camila responds 'You're a natural' are so cute. After that, we got the adorable little scene of Camila and Yasmine watching what Adriel's followers are doing and Yasmine being all 'nope, I'm out', while Camila wants to help them and tells Yasmine that Sister Warriors don't run and when Yasmine starts saying that she's not a Sister Warrior, Camila insists that she is, which is very cute and obviously important for later.

For now, Yasmine is still not super amused about staying, pouting in the corner while Camila calls Mother Superion. I love how both Camila and Yasmine have their little rebellious phases, which mostly just manifest for both of them in pouting and making faces. :D

Now we're already in the finale, with Yasmine getting a bit more to do. I love how her and Camila are so in sync in the beginning, taking off their hoods simultaneously. It's very cute. And then we get Yasmine being concerned since the plan doesn't involve actually getting out, because it's an 'either we succeed and we don't need a plan since all the enemies will be dead or gone and we can just walk out or we are all dead anyways' kind of plan. Her little 'oh' at that realization is adorable. It's also really nice of Ava to tell her that she can just wait outside, that she did enough already, but of course, Yasmine doesn't want that, she wants to help.

And Camila supports her, saying she's one of them. Which prompts Ava to do that adorable little cross gesture over Yasmine as if she's knighting her and Yasmine getting all excited, being like 'that's it? That's how it works? I'm a Sister Warrior now?' only for Beatrice to immediately pop that bubble and going all 'nope, absolutely not how any of that works', lmao. But they don't have time for more, since bullets start flying the next second.

Yasmine holding on to her cross (the one Mother Superion gave her) and being all 'Sister Warriors don't run. Sister Warriors don't run' is hilarious and adorable as is her actually running through the bullets five seconds later in that cute little headless chicken way. :P I really appreciate all of her and Beatrice's interactions here, since Beatrice has always been the one who was the most reserved towards Yasmine (as is her nature), but with everything that is going on in this episode, she softens so much and it's amazing to see.

Yasmine picking up the cloaks for them to disguise themselves again is so funny, because there's a running joke in the fandom that these characters just leave cloaks lying around everywhere. They do love a dramatic de-cloaking a whole lot and we indeed never really see what happens to those cloaks afterwards, so Yasmine just standing there with two armfuls of cloaks is hilarious.

I'm not sure why Beatrice chooses Yasmine to go with them to find the arc, possibly because the better fighters are needed to get to the cross, where they assume there would be more resistance, but anyways, Yasmine is there with them when Ava finally reveals that the arc isn't there at all, that she got Jillian to lie about it and that her plan is to sacrifice herself for the others. Which, of course, Beatrice is not okay with and again, Yasmine can do nothing but stand there when these two have their emotional moment.

It's kind of funny how much of her character is that, being the spectator when others have important moments, but it's also really interesting to me. I've made a graphic of her for the theme sidekick and I feel like it does fit her well. She's the one who observes, who helps, who goes with whoever needs her right now. It's quite interesting that as a character who only came in in the second season, she already was present in so many of these important emotional moments, for just about everyone.

That's not to say that she doesn't have her own moments of triumph, actually she does right after this, when she is the one to realize where the arc actually is, that Adriel has repeated the design of his first church and therefore the arc has to be underground. I love how her whole face lights up, because finally, she can do what she's good at, using her brain and her historical knowledge. And of course, Beatrice instantly recognizes that she's right and adjusts their plan accordingly.

Now we're in the final moments, and for Yasmine those are some of her most important and most poignant ones. First, she is fangirling over Beatrice beating the shit out of everyone guarding the elevator but then of course, William has to sneak up on her to ruin that. But she's not a hostage, she's a Sister Warrior! She actually does hold her own for about two seconds there, I'm quite proud of her. But of course, William gets the upper hand, beating her down, taunting her that Mother Superion is dead (he thinks he killed her, which is true but Ava revived her). And then comes my absolute favorite scene, where Yasmine lies on the floor but instead of panicking as she did before during the heist and in the conclave, she stays calm and collected, taking the knife out of the cross and saying calmly 'it's not true, she's alive and with me still' and with that, takes one look at William and slices his leg in exactly the right way to kill him.

I will allow for suspense of disbelief here because her going on about how she cut his artery when he keeps taunting her is so badass and amazing, I don't even care if it's biologically feasible. All I care about is that Yasmine did what Mother Superion told her to, she used her knowledge and the tool she was given to protect herself even when she was afraid and that is honestly the only thing that matters to me. I'm always a big fan of callbacks and this is just such a great one, I love it so much.

And then of course, despite being beaten and done and just having had to kill for the first time, William's body still lying there, Yasmine is all ready and willing to accompany Beatrice to do whatever is necessary to save the Warrior Nun, to save Ava. I love how soft Beatrice is with her here, how gently she turns her down and tells her she needs to do this alone, that Yasmine should find the others and get out. Of course, Yasmine agrees, but then she just collapses.

I love her little 'Maybe I'll just sit here and bleed for a while', it's so relatable, lol. She's just so done and I love her more for just going 'okay, I know this fight is far from over, but I've been dismissed so I'm just gonna check out for a bit, bye'. It's a very understandable reaction and I'm glad she got the opportunity to do that. Well, I hope someone did come looking for her eventually, but I'm assuming they did and got her out.

They must have, of course, since in the after credits scene we see Yasmine between Camila and Mother Superion (that's her place and I'm glad they acknowledge that) when they are seeing Beatrice off, Yasmine now in full Sister Warrior gear. Meaning she did it, she actually became a Sister Warrior and I couldn't be more proud of her. She achieved everything she ever set out to achieve and more even, she got a family in the process.

Such a great ending for a great character.
